Week 5- assignment 1- Blog and college reflection article

This was a very interesting article to read.   I was quite surprised at the study that blogs did not increase student’s grades, however I do feel that blogs are a great tool to be used. Blogging has become a very popular way of communication and has had a great impact on college students in reading and literacy. Teachers can use blogs in many different ways, they can communicate with each other by commenting on their work, teachers can post homework and assignments. Blogs create a rich learning environment for students, students can set their blogs to private and design it however they would like. Students can also collaborate with other students around the world and motivates them to learning and participate. However, there were challenges for teachers when using the blog. Teachers need to be equipped with the necessary training to incorporate new literacies successfully into their teaching, in order to allow their students to be engaged in the 21 st century of learning with th...

UDL Book Builder

http://bookbuilder.cast.org/view.php?op=view&book=129411&page=1 I really enjoyed creating my book which teaches an important lesson to young children about lying. I look forward to implementing book builder in my classroom. Students can use their creativity, imagination skills, writing skills, and new literacies.! Thank you for introducing this to me.

Second Life In the classroom

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mo0v7r1859huca5/Screenshot%202018-06-21%2012.59.21.png?dl=0 This is a screenshot of my avatar I explored Moscow  Island and found it to be very interesting. Second Life can be used in the classroom and ELA instruction, students can travel all around the world, interact with other people as well and instant message- this is great for communication and collaboration skills. Students can visit different historical sites, and educational places, scientific phenomenons, and  discuss different elements of literacy . Goals can be set up for students to reach and they can create activities. This is something that is new and exciting for students, and it creates a virtual learning in the classroom.Students get to create their own avatar and an identity for themselves.

My philosophy of gaming in the classroom

After learning so much about games, I feel that games should be used in the classroom and it is a tool that can be used to enhance students learning experience.   I loved looking through the websites! It is great for both teachers and students. When games are used it can be engaging, exciting, and motivating for students to learn. Which student in today’s generation doesn’t love games?!   Students can access games from anywhere, and review and practice information that they are learning in class. Students can learn a variety of very important skills from the games. Teachers can track students’ progress and assess how they are learning. I feel very strongly that teachers should make use of gaming in the classroom, and they should learn about all the different games that are available out there to enhance students learning.

Gaming in the Classroom

I really enjoyed and was amazed when I looked through the website Gamestar Mechanic! It is a fascinating tool to be used in the classroom. Teachers and students can create educational games on their own. The website is extremely easy to use, friendly and it can be incorporated in many subjects. When students create their own games, it can make a big difference and have an effect on their learning, students have to use their creativity skills. When students play games, it gets them motivated and engaged in their learning. When students explain the game to their classmates   or when they   write the script they are working on their language skills.

It’s a great website and has many great games that teaches students great skills. The goal is to get Cuz-Cuz to hop into the correct mud pile. This will help students with common sight words and improve their reading and listening skills. It will also help students with the spelling of these words. https://www.education.com/game/jump-in-sight-word-mud/- I think this is a fantastic game. Assessment Teacher will assess students after they finish playing the game- based on the score that they got. If the teacher see’s that a student did not...

Week 2-2 New Literacies Definition and Components

·          The teacher that I interviewed does not use technology to enhance her instruction, she does sometimes show them a video but that doesn’t happen very often. However, she does use many visual aids and hands on activities to engage and motivate her students while learning. ·          A way that I would say to change the teacher’s instruction to include technology would be to include an interactive white board- smart board, so the teacher can show the class different videos, and pictures in big so students can visualize what they are learning, and she can have access to many different resources. A smart board is a great tool to be used in the classroom and students really enjoy to learn with it. The teacher should also use some iPad where students can play different games to strengthen their literacy skills. ·          The teacher would need to have profes...

Week 2-1 Theory in Practice

After reading this article and taking many courses with NYIT I realize the importance of using new literacies in the classroom.   Technology is changing the world in such a fast pace that it is imperative that classrooms include new literacies. Technology is becoming so popular and being used in school, college, the work force, and just day to day life, it is extremely important that students know how to use these tools for the future ahead of them. Technology makes student be more engaged in learning, which results in higher achievement, students also find that when technology is incorporated in the lessons it Is much more fun, exciting and engaging. Additionally, teachers also need lots of training and professional development to be fluent with all the new literacies.

Week 1-3 ELA Teacher Interview

I interviewed a Kindergarten teacher to learn about how technology is integrated in her ELA teaching. How do you use technology to support ELA instruction? She said that she thinks that technology is an amazing tool to be used in the classroom to support student learning. The school that she teaches in does not allow that much technology to be used, so she is therefore very limited and she can’t use all the great tools that are out there. However, she said that she uses lots of visual aids and hands on activities throughout the day. She also shows them video clips, and pictures to enhance and motivate students learning and interest. These clips and even music ones help them with what they are teaching, for example when they are learning a new letter. She also said that she shows them PowerPoint presentation- to make concepts clearer for them, when they learned about the lifecycle of a butterfly. There is also a listening and auditory center in the classroom students take earphone...

Week 1- 2 Understanding ELA Instruction

In Grades K-5, there is one teacher responsible for ELA instruction. In Grades 6-12, the responsibility is divided between the ELA teacher and the teacher of history, science, and technical subjects. Reading- this focuses on text complexity and comprehension. Students need to learn and to develop to make connections between texts and ideas, and to make inferences and conclusions from the text. As students get older and their writing improves they become aware of mistake in texts and poor texts. Writing-   Students need to know how to plan, revise, edit and publish their writing in order for them to write a good piece. Reading and writing is connected, these skills help students with their writing skills to create narratives, and informative and explanatory texts. Students need to draw evidence from what they write about, research is also part of this standard. Speaking & Listening-   Teachers need to make sure and students are expected to collaborate and communicat...

Week 1- Understanding Common Core for ELA & Literacy

The Common Core State Standards were released in June 2010, it is a learning standard for all students. This was created when they realized that in each state the standards were very different.   Students also could have been either falling behind in one state and preforming very well in a different state. These students were not being well prepared for college and to succeed outside the classroom.   The Common Core is broken into 4 categories; reading, writing, speaking & listening, and language. The Standards gives teachers a goal and outline of what to work with, it helps them stay focused and on track to what they are teaching. After watching this video, I now have a better understanding of how important it is to implement the Common Core State Standards in the classroom, it can sometimes be a challenge for the teacher, however it helps the student in college and outside the classroom.

Week 1- Self Introduction

Click here to view my voki- http://tinyurl.com/y9y9ndxc 2.         If I would to write a book about myself I would probably name it “Life is out of my control”, as I am growing older I see how much that whatever happens in my life is not in my control 3.         A good joke that I heard and like, a teacher asked a student for his homework, the student answered I don’t have it the teacher asked what happened to it? The student answered that I made it into a paper airplane and it got hijacked :)! 4.        I am currently not teaching as of now, but I have taught in an early childhood classroom in the past. I am in my fifth semester in NYIT and I hope to be graduating this December in a Masters in Early childhood education. 5.        I am familiar with the term “new literacies”, and teaching language arts from different courses that I...
