Reflection on new literacies

Educators in the 21st century need to utilize technology in their classroom, since children today are born as digital natives. Teachers should use technology to aid student cognitive learning and apply it for collaboration and exchange of ideas. It is essential that we give our students the necessary foundational skills for the future. When planning a lesson, a teacher has to make sure to include technology. There are endless amount of opportunities and ways that teachers can incorporate technology in their lessons, it keeps the student engaged, motivated, and makes the lesson relevant to them. For example, students can use google earth, google maps when they are learning geography or Social Studies. Students can create a PowerPoint to present to the class, about a subject they have been learning. With the abundances of new literacies, teachers can reach out to students with Google docs, blog, Edmodo, etc.
These technologies can help students learn information, learn to interpret words, get to communicate and collaborate with other students. Technology also makes learning that much more exciting, engaging and motivating.
There are so many technological tools that are out there that students can use. Students can use blogger, Book builder, voki, screencastomatic, smore, Voice thread, and so much more. These technological tools like the internet gives students a chance to interact with one another, provide feedback, and to learn new information and critical thinking skills. In order for new literacies to be successfully integrated into the curriculum, teachers need to constantly be updated and take professional development workshops, and schools and administrators need to be willing to allow these tools to be used in the classroom.
In conclusion, using new literacies in the classroom is extremely important it prepares students for the future when they graduate and it provides students with critical skills and knowledge, which is a key success in the 21st century.

The teacher that I interview actually really like the idea of using new literacies in the classroom. However, the school that she works in does not allow technology to be used. Students in her class are used to the old traditional method of teaching. The teacher uses lots of hands on activities and visuals to keep her students involved and engaged and active in the lesson.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to implement this lesson, I really gained a tremendous amount from it! It was a real learning experience!
